The Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Southern New Jersey Development Council, collectively representing hundreds of businesses and thousands of employees in two opposite corners of New Jersey, have endorsed the PennEast Pipeline Project.
The two new endorsements add to an overwhelming list of nearly every major business and labor organization in New Jersey that support the PennEast Pipeline Project, which is under review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
“In our home Bergen and Hudson County region, energy reliability is crucial to our sports, entertainment, manufacturing and retail sectors,” said Jim Kirkos, president and CEO of Meadowlands Regional Chamber. “PennEast Pipeline is a major regional infrastructure investment that will have broad positive impacts across New Jersey’s economy, by reducing costs for businesses and creating thousands of jobs. In the end, PennEast will power New Jersey’s energy future, and the Meadowlands Chamber is proud to support its application.”
The Southern New Jersey Development Council (SNJDC), a non-profit economic development organization representing over 300 businesses across 3,700 square miles in southern New Jersey, seconded the Meadowlands Regional Chamber’s support for the PennEast Pipeline.
“We want to avoid scenarios seen in recent winters where demand outpaced gas supply and energy prices spiked, which in turn hurt the bottom lines of businesses or forced them to suspend operations until more affordable energy supplies were available,” said Marlene Asselta, president of SNJDC. “The additional 1 billion cubic feet per day of clean-burning natural gas that the PennEast Pipeline can deliver will help meet current and future demand, and help make South Jersey an even more attractive place to do business thanks to more stable pricing, enhanced reliability and lower cost energy.”
“We’re proud to have the Meadowlands Regional Chamber and SNJDC supporting the PennEast Pipeline Project,” said Pat Kornick, spokeswoman for PennEast. “They understand how important this clean energy project is to reducing energy costs and improving energy infrastructure to strengthen New Jersey’s economy for decades into the future. The PennEast Pipeline Project will deliver reliable, affordable energy that will keep local businesses growing, create jobs and invest in the Garden State.”
A study by Concentric Energy Advisors found PennEast would conservatively have saved New Jersey energy customers alone more than $375 million during the 2013-2014 winter season on electric and gas bills.
