PennEast Investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Opportunities for New Jersey Students

Students of the Governor’s STEM Scholars Program are the latest to benefit from the PennEast Pipeline Company’s Powering STEM Grant Program, which presented an award today at the New Jersey State House in Trenton. The $10,000 grant will enable the Governor’s STEM Scholars Program to serve additional students across New Jersey while also creating opportunities and new programming for young women and underserved populations in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, according to Pam Witmer of the PennEast Pipeline Company.

“PennEast is proud to support the expansion of the Governor’s STEM Scholars Program, a comprehensive program that provides students from diverse backgrounds across New Jersey with significant educational and networking opportunities that will help prepare them for a successful STEM career,” said Witmer. “We are confident that this important investment will contribute to our combined efforts to ensure that New Jersey remains a global STEM leader moving into the future.”

The Governor’s STEM Scholars Program, founded in 2013 by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey in partnership with the Governor’s Office, New Jersey Department of Education, and Office of Secretary of Higher Education, has provided nearly 200 students from grade 10 through the doctorate level with an introduction to New Jersey’s STEM economy through a series of conferences, field trips, a research project, and professional and mentoring opportunities. As the demand from New Jersey companies and researchers for qualified STEM graduates continues to increase significantly, the program aims to encourage students to explore STEM careers, understanding that developing the State’s STEM talent pipeline also will advance New Jersey’s economic development.

“Given the importance of STEM to our economy, it is essential that New Jersey strengthens its STEM pipeline by showing our most talented students the incredible opportunities available to them across the state,” said David Hodges, Director of the Governor’s STEM Scholars Program. “I would like to thank PennEast for investing in the growth of our program, which will enable us to have a profound impact on more New Jersey students and our state’s economy for many years to come.”

PennEast representatives also had an opportunity to meet with program directors and scholars participating in the Governor’s STEM Scholars Program and learn more about this year’s program and the different opportunities in which program participants have been engaged.

Introduced only in February, the PennEast Powering STEM Grant Program has invested nearly $130,000 to more than a dozen schools and nonprofit organizations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
